142.8…Inferno

I actually believe that when I eat something it goes into a fiery pit that is my stomach. I feel like food gets incinerated on impact and that’s why I am hungry all the time. How do I put out the raging flames!?!

Before I left for my final birthday party of the weekend yesterday, I snacked on some hummus, carrots and unpictured Wheat Thins.

At the party they had sushi from Costco. I couldn’t say no to that. I did say no to the pizza and the cupcakes. I am a strong woman.

When we got home it was dinner time and I wanted to make something quick. I had this in my freezer:

Trader Joe’s Penne Arrabbiata. I think it had been there way too long. It was a frozen rock. When I cooked it, it got a little mushy from trying to break it apart.

The bag said it was 3 servings. That plate above is HALF the bag. I could eat the entire bag by myself easily. I don’t know what three people this would satisfy….toddlers? Good thing I ate the sushi.

Since I had to run this morning I had my go-to run meal: peanut butter on toast. This time I had some strawberries with it:

Hubby took the kids to school and I went to Cardio Muscle class. My arms are going to be sore tomorrow. We did tons of shoulder work! Afterwards I took care of my half marathon training: 3 miles of rolling hills on the treadmill. I was a sweaty mess at the end. I don’t know what it is about the treadmill but it’s so much harder! Maybe it was the hill work but I was dying by the time I was done.

I came home to feed the inferno that is my stomach: Turkey and provolone cheese on a sandwich thin with a big salad:

I was not full. Anybody have a fire extinguisher?

I went to pick up my daughter. I thought a quick trip to Starbucks for a latte would fill me up a little and give me a little energy boost. Not so much.

I ran into the grocery store for some fresh produce. We were seriously lacking in that department. I picked up my son from school and had a snack:

Red bell pepper with hummus and a Babybel cheese. I’m ready for dinner.

What satisfies you when you find yourself really hungry?

What’s the farthest you’ve run on a treadmill? 3 miles. My brain would explode if I had to further.

  2. I didn't know running on a treadmill was harder! I used to do a 5k on it 5 times a week - I had to stop because it was killing my knees. You're so funny - the fiery pit!

  3. When I can't get full, it's usually because I need more fat. I used to think it was protein, but I could eat chicken and turkey til the cows come home and still be hungry an hour later. Fats, like more nut butters, avocado, and cheeses really do better for helping me calm the flames. :-) You are doing a lot of exercise, don't be afraid to fuel yourself.

  4. For me, the first 3 miles are HORRIBLE, everything after that is awesome. I did 8.5 miles yesterday, and judging by the rain already at 6AM here, it'll be another dreadmill day for me! Good luck w/ your training.

  5. I think you have the inferno because you are working out more and your body is craving more food....because it's burning through it faster. That's a good thing! Maybe you need to add another snack to your day or another mini meal since you are a running machine!

  8. I tend to a variety of cardio workout to avoid redundancy, like running at my own paste as long as possible, run uphill, run as fast as possible. The longest that I have ever run on a treadmill is probably 8 miles, listening to good workout music keep your minds off of getting tired.

Same goes for food. Fat is good for fueling up. I tend to have homemade granola bars with nuts. Drinking sugar water (like Gatorade) during training, avoid having the mentality of being hungry.

  10. This post is so timely for me! I have been having the same issue and i can't figure out why. I just checked back to read other's comments on this post to see if anyone had any great insight...i am thinking it might be the increased exercise (for me) and not compensating with enough food to balanace it out. anyway, so glad you brought the topic up and i hope you figure out how to handle your own inferno! :)
ps - love your blog, read it daily! just have never commented before...

  11. I have the inferno stomach problem too, except my metabolism can't keep up if I feed it everything it wants. I find lean protein (turkey, tuna, ham) keeps me satisfied more than anything else, which is nature's cruel joke on me b/c animal flesh is my least favorite thing to eat. The furthest I've ran on a treadmill is probably 3 miles too. I always did the longer roads outside b/c it really does make it easier. I think it helps to have things to look out and distract from how hard you're working out.

  12. HP - So glad you came out from hiding and commented! I love to know that you guys are out there somewhere! :)
I'm thinking for me I might need more fat (thanks Victor & Mo) but I guess I'll just have to try things and see. Good luck!
