142.2…Things I hate when I run

A couple of hours before I left for track practice last night, I made a quick dinner. I cooked some onions, shredded carrots, cherry tomatoes and shrimp in some of Trader Joe’s Curry Simmer Sauce and added it to some brown rice. I topped the whole thing with cilantro. Delicious!

I had a bit of a sweet tooth on the way to track so I had one of the chocolates I got out of the goody bag from Saturday’s charity event:

Chocolate and Toffee. :)

Track was tough as usual but it felt good. I think I shouldn’t eat such a big meal before I go. Even though I ate two hours before I ran, I could still feel it. Maybe just a snack before and a snack after?

I did have a snack when I got home. Peanut Butter sandwich:

For breakfast this morning I made some scrambled egg beaters with chopped jalapeno peppers, spinach and shredded cheddar cheese. I had some cantaloupe to go with it:

I took the kids to school and stopped at Starbucks for a green tea. Next stop was Great News for a cooking class. Today’s class was entitled “Spring Into Citrus”.

First up was Roasted Lemon Pepper Salmon with Dill, Shallots and Capers:

Love the caper sauce on the salmon! So good!

The next recipe was Florentine Chicken Bundles with Lemon Basil Beurre Blanc:

So Good!!!! The chicken was stuffed with a spinach mixture, prosciutto and provolone cheese. And the lemon beurre blanc was off the hook. But what’s not to like about a butter sauce!?!

The third recipe was Apricot-Orange Glazed Pork Tenderloin with Citrus Habanero Mojo Sauce:

This was my least favorite. I loved the pork but the sauce was too fruity for me and not spicy enough.

We had two desserts: Double Lemon Curd Cheesecake Pie with Sugared Blueberries AND Chocolate Brownies with Orange Cream Cheese Frosting and Pistachio Nuts:

Both were unbelievably excellent. Oh my. The lemon curd cheesecake was so freaking good!!! I need to make this! And the brownies were divine. LOVED the orange cream cheese frosting with the pistachio nuts! Never would have thought of that combo before!

After class, I went into Road Runner Sports to pick up a few things and went to pick up the kiddos from school.

Today’s half marathon training was 4 miles. Seems simple enough right? Not. Today was the hardest run of my training so far.

Things I hate when I run:
  • Running in the late afternoon
  • Running when it’s hot
  • Running on a full stomach
  • Running with my new “wagon”:

I bought this fuel/water belt today at Road Runner sports. Now that my mileage is starting to increase, I was told I probably would need one. I thought I’d give it a trial run today with the water bottles full. Well, I felt like I was pulling a wagon. I hated every minute of it. I almost left it in the bushes to pick back up when I ran back. I tried drinking the water to make it lighter but that made my stomach hurt. How do you run with this thing????

It also was later in the afternoon, it was warm out and I had just been at cooking class a few hours before eating lots of food. Ugh. My four miles turned into about 3 or so with some walking. My legs felt like lead. Boo!

I almost forgot to say Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Fortunately, I have something fun to look forward to tonight. This summer we are taking the kids on a Disney cruise to Alaska with another couple and their kids as well as a couple more couples with their kids that we don’t know. Our friend arranged a dinner tonight for all the adults to meet and get to know one another. AND we are having SUSHI! YES!

Any St. Patrick’s Day plans?

Do you/have you run with a water belt? How do you do it?????

  2. I'm sorry you had a rough run but I won't lie and say that you thinking about leaving it in the bushes, didn't leave me chuckling! Because it did! Hopefully it gets easier for you! Have a great time tonight with the adults!!

  4. I don't run, so I can't comment on what I run with, but that belt looks way too...heavy.

Disney cruise?? Soooo looking forward to your posts on that!!

  5. The most I run is 4 miles....so I don't need a water belt! I wish I had an iphone belt though, so I can listen to Pandora while I run. :-)

The caper sauce on the salmon sure looks awesome!!

  6. who knew running could be such a complex sport! to run with the heavy, belt or to drink the water and get a side sticker!?! that's the question! but running on a full stomach would have to be the absolute WORST for me!

  7. I can't exercise on a full stomach--ick. I have no idea how you run with that thing--it looks so cumbersome! Don't they have water stops for you guys on your runs together? I never needed to have a belt for my training but admittedly, I ran on the treadmill for a lot of the days I wasn't out with the group. At the race itself, there are a lots of drink stations. I did have special shorts with pockets all the way around that I stuffed with those energy jelly beans, etc, but didn't need those either. I don't like running in the heat either, but strangely, people don't run around here until it starts warming up. I see them running down the street, drenched in sweat, in the middle of the afternoon in summer. No thanks! The colder outside, the better for a run as far as I'm concerned b/c that way I don't get too hot.

  8. i agree with running on a full stomach and late in the afternoon - too hard. i've never run with a belt, even when i trained for a full...i bet you can find a way to not carry it :)

  9. Yeah, I'm going to do my best to not run with that belt. During my Saturday runs, I always pass the aid station at least once. And there are apparently lots of them during my half marathon. I know I can go 6 miles without water just fine so far. That things is a beast! No more belt! :)

  11. I had a more comfortable water belt with just one bottle - it also held my advil, goo, tissues. When you're running 10+ miles in training you're going to need your own stuff. I think at the race you'll be okay but the one bottle belts are a lot easier.

  12. I hate water belts, too...even the ones that hold just one bottle. I hate how they bounce around - so distracting! I found that during races, I was fine without water because of all the water stations. However, when I was trainig, I would drive along my route before I went running and hide those little 4 or 6 ounce bottles along the rounte. Strange, I know, but it worked. As for Gu (or Shot Blocks in your case), Advil, etc., I just safety pinned everything to my running top and shorts. Also, I would suggest grabbing a few salt packets from a fast food restaurant. Break one open in your pocket (if you have one, or use a little snack baggie) and just dip your finger in (and lick) about every 5 miles. It helps replace everything you're losing through sweat. :-)

  13. Melissa: Thanks for the advice. I wasn't exactly sure what to do with the salt packets. That explains a lot!
