146.2...The 3AM Wakeup Call

My husband and I got a chance to go to a food tasting Tuesday night for the San Diego Chargers new food and beverage provider. I tried a few things…..tasty!!!

IMG 3852

Later on, we went out to dinner at Chef Chin. We shared Vegetable Lo Mein and Kung Pao Chicken.

IMG 3853

IMG 3854

I really liked everything and would definitely go back. I appreciated that they asked us what level of spice, from 1 to 5, that we would like for the Kung Pao Chicken. My husband said 5. I was nervous but it wasn’t too spicy.

Breakfast yesterday:

IMG 3855

I took my son to camp, then went to the gym. My daughter and I ran errands, stopping at Island’s for lunch. I tried their veggie tacos which were really good!

IMG 3858

Before I picked up my son from camp, I stopped at Starbucks for a much needed iced skinny vanilla latte.

IMG 3859

We went to my son’s basketball game, then to Alicia’s for dinner. I brought salad and wine and she picked up Napizza.

IMG 3861

I enjoyed our standard Bolognese pizza as well as the pizza of the day which was one where they cooked bacon in the sauce for a long time. Outstanding. My new favorite there.

Breakfast today:

IMG 3864

I took my son to camp then went to the mall with my daughter. We had lunch at Red Robin. I tried their Ensenada Chicken Platter basically because it was lower in calories. It turned out to be a pretty good lunch….I was skeptical.

IMG 3865

So….last night at 3AM our smoke alarms went off. For no reason. This happened last week as well! I replace the batteries every year. I’m about to loose my mind with these things! After some research, it seems the model smoke detector we have is older and this happens a lot with them. I have immediately placed an order for 9 of the newer models. Wish me luck. Ugh.

Does this false smoke alarm thing ever happen to you? Why is it always in the middle of the night!?!

144.6...Cool Summer Sauces

My evening last night went a bit differently than planned. The kids wanted to see the movie Inside Out so I bought tickets for last night. I realized, ahead fortunately, that the particular theater at Cinepolis showing the movie was a 21+ theater. To my defense, why would a kid’s movie be 21+???

I had to go to the theater for my refund, so we stopped at Mia Francesca across the way for dinner. We were supposed to go to Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza but my kids outnumbered me so I lost.

I did enjoy my Salmone all Fresca (roasted wild salmon with tomato, avocado, red onion, olive oil, basil, lemon over grilled asparagus):

IMG 3841

Breakfast today:

IMG 3844

I went to the gym for 45 minutes on the treadmill before heading to the La Jolla Community Center for a cooking class with Phillis Carey. Today’s class was “Cool Summer Sauces” and it was all about sauces that aren’t cooked added to things that are cooked.

The first recipe was Fresh Heirloom Tomato Sauce with Grilled Shrimp, Kalamata Olives and Feta Cheese on Bow Tie Pasta:

IMG 3845

So fresh and delicious!! What a great dish to serve to a crowd or a potluck! Would be good with chicken too!

The second plate had a couple different recipes: Blackened Chicken Breasts with Cajun Tartar Sauce along with Creamy Garlic Grits with Fresh Herbs:

IMG 3846

Let me just say that the tartar sauce was OUTSTANDING. The next time I barbecue I’m making the chicken simply for the sauce. Don’t get me wrong, the chicken was great too and worked perfectly with the tartar sauce.

As for the grits, they were really good! I don’t eat grits very often but this recipe may change that.

Next up was Asian Avocado, Watercress and Jicama Salsa on Honey-Soy Salmon Fillets:

IMG 3847

Great marinade on the salmon! The salsa was good too! Phillis mentioned that fresh raw corn could be used in place of the jicama….I would definitely try that too!

Dessert was Strawberries Balsamico with Mascarpone Cream:

IMG 3848

The perfect summer dessert. Amazing!

Now I’m at Starbucks waiting for camp pick-up. Before I leave you, I would like to show you something I bought recently:

IMG 3840

100 packets of Cholula. Yes. Now I will always have them in my bag in case of an emergency like a restaurant not having any! The fear of not having hot sauce is over! If you see me, you know I will have hot sauce on hand so you don’t have to be scared anymore either. ;)

What’s the weirdest thing you have in your bag right now?

147.6...Beach Eats

Our weekend at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club was amazing. I’m not the biggest beach fan (not too keen on sand) but I had a blast.

IMG 3600

We settled into our room and then went out to dinner at Su Casa.  We started with table-side guacamole. It’s a must.

IMG 3602

The guacamole was excellent. My Crab Enchiladas? Eh. Bland. Boo.

IMG 3603

After a good dousing in Cholula, they were better.

Saturday morning my husband picked up breakfast at Harry’s Coffee Shop. We split the Carne Asada Breakfast Burrito (carne asada, eggs, cheese, hash browns, onions, tomatoes & guacamole) and hash browns.

IMG 3604

Amazing breakfast burrito. The hash browns were perfect too! Sometimes it’s hard to find old school hash browns like that! I’m glad we split it…it was huge!

The rest of the day was spent at the beach.

IMG 3610

The kids boogie boarded and swam until they couldn’t do it anymore. It was so fun to watch them enjoy themselves so much!

I had a tuna sandwich and fries for lunch. Great sandwich!

IMG 3612

That night we went to Barbarella’s for dinner. My husband and I split the Barbarella Chop Salad (cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, toasted almonds, avocado):

IMG 3613

I ordered the Spaghetti con Vongole which was delicious.

IMG 3614

Yesterday morning we had to have the Carne Asada Breakfast Burrito from Harry’s again!

IMG 3615

It was back to the beach. I had The Italian Garden Salad for lunch.

IMG 3616

Then we packed up and headed home. We went over to Alicia’s for dinner. She made her fabulous tacos and shrimp!

IMG 3617

Breakfast this morning was the old favorite:

IMG 3619

I dropped my son off at camp and then I took my daughter to the San Diego Zoo. We took the bus tour, then stopped for lunch at the Tree Top Cafe. I had the Greek Salad which was surprisingly good!

IMG 3621

Then I treated my daughter to the Backstage Pass Tour/Show. It was fabulous! It’s not everyday you get to feed giraffes and flamingoes!

145.8...Eating My Way Through Petco Park

Wednesday afternoon I needed a snack. I ate an early lunch and dinner would be late and I knew I’d never make it otherwise. Peanut butter on apple slices did the trick.

IMG 3571

After my son’s basketball game we went to Mia Francesca for dinner. I had a house salad and beef carpaccio with avocado.

IMG 3577

IMG 3578

I enjoyed both! The carpaccio was especially delicious.

Breakfast Thursday:

IMG 3579

I took my son to a golf lesson, then I went to an appointment. Lunch was at Zip Fusion Sushi. Salmon, Tuna and Yellowtail Sushi:

IMG 3581

Manhattan Roll (spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber, gobo with yellowtail on top):

IMG 3582

Later that night, Alicia and I went to Petco Park for the baseball game and to support Lisa’s daughter’s dance troupe, Sassafras. They performed outside the Park before the game.

I’m not the biggest baseball fan but I am a fan of food. There was a lot of good food to be enjoyed at the Park. Where to begin? This giant bottle of Cholula was calling our name:

IMG 3585

We had to put it on something!

IMG 3586

Perfect. Carne asada tacos! I need to get myself that giant bottle of Cholula. I want to pump it all over my food.

Lauren, Alicia and I:

IMG 3593

Diana and I:

IMG 3594

We watched the game for a bit but had a better idea:

IMG 3595

Hodad’s! I had never been! We all shared onion rings and fries:

IMG 3596

I ordered the Single Cheeseburger:

IMG 3597

Delicious! Now we want to go to the original Hodad’s soon!!!

And that’s the way I do Petco Park. :)

Breakfast this morning:

IMG 3598

I went to Zumba class then came home to pack up. We are going away for the weekend to celebrate a belated Father’s Day. My kids were at camp during Father’s Day so we decided to postpone it to this weekend.

Lunch was a turkey avocado sandwich with a salad.

IMG 3599

Have a great weekend!

What are your favorite treats at the ballpark?

144.6...Tikka Masala

We are giant spicy food lovers at my house. We love to put hot sauce on everything. Every now and then a dish comes around that is spicy enough for my liking and doesn’t require the extra heat. Last night I made one of those dishes. It came from another food blogger who also likes it spicy so I knew I wasn’t going to be disappointed. And it was Indian food to boot! Two favorites in one!  You can definitely tone down the spice in the recipe to your liking. My husband still put hot sauce on his. :)

IMG 3567

Tikka Masala  (Serves 6)

Recipe adapted from My Bizzy Kitchen

Marinade for chicken:

1.8 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite size pieces

1 6oz. container plain Greek yogurt

1 Tbsp. lemon juice

2 tsp. ground cumin

1 tsp. ground cinnamon

2 tsp. cayenne pepper

1 tsp. black pepper

1 Tbsp. grated fresh ginger

2 tsp. salt

1 Tbsp. butter

1 cup diced onions

1 jalapeno pepper, chopped (seeds and membrane removed)

1 garlic clove, minced

2 tsp. ground cumin

2 tsp. paprika

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp. curry powder

1/4 tsp. Sriracha sauce

6 dried chiles

8 oz. tomato sauce

1 cup heavy cream

1. Mix the chicken with the marinade and let it sit for an hour in the refrigerator.

2. Melt butter in a sauté pan. Add onions, jalapeño and garlic and cook until onions start to become translucent. Add seasonings and stir for 2 minutes until fragrant. Add chicken. Cook for about 4-5 minutes.

3. Add chiles, tomato sauce and heavy cream. Cook for an additional 10 minutes or until chicken is cooked all the way through. Be careful not to boil the sauce.

IMG 3566

It was yummy with basmati rice, peas and naan bread!

Monday night my husband and I went out to Samurai to celebrate our belated wedding anniversary.  Our meal started with the standard miso soup and salad.

IMG 3557

IMG 3558

I have a recipe somewhere for this type of ginger dressing. It is SO good! Why don’t I make this at home!?!

I ordered the NY steak with fried rice.

IMG 3560

We need to go to Samurai more often. I forgot how much I enjoy this meal.

Breakfast yesterday was the usual.

IMG 3561

I went to Cardio Strength class, an appointment, then home for lunch. Turkey and avocado sandwich with a side salad. Very satisfying.

IMG 3562

Dinner was the Tikka Masala. I restrained myself from getting seconds somehow.

IMG 3565

Breakfast today:

IMG 3568

I went to a new class (for me) at the gym: Ultimate Burn. It was a tabata style workout and it kicked my butt. I left drenched in sweat. A blog reader from out of town was in my class and recognized me. It’s always funny when that happens!

Lunch was so good yesterday it was repeated today.

IMG 3569

Tonight is my son’s basketball game. It’s kind of late so I think we will go out to dinner. Not sure where we are going yet…it’s hard for all of us to agree on a restaurant. I usually lose.

Does everyone in your family tend to agree on what restaurant to go to?
