137.0…The Fighter

That’s the best way to describe my dad. A Fighter. He continues to improve each day. It’s been two steps forward, one step back….even one step forward and two steps back but we are slowly making progress. Thank you again for your continued prayers and support.

Thursday night I went with my brother and sister in law to Zushi across the street from the hospital. We split a bunch of different sushi.

March 2013 172

I ate breakfast with my mom on Friday morning. I had my standard veggie and cheese omelet.

March 2013 173

Lunch was a BLT with avocado and a cup of vegetable barley soup.

March 2013 174

My husband joined us for dinner that night at Luciano’s. We split the brushetta again.

March 2013 175

As well as a pizza.

March 2013 176

I stayed at the hotel with my husband and woke up late so I missed breakfast. I went to the hospital and waited to eat lunch with everyone. I had a turkey burger and a salad.

March 2013 177

Dinner was at Gyu-Kaku. It’s a Korean BBQ style restaurant where you cook your own food at the table but it’s Japanese food.

We shared a Gyu-Kaku salad (lettuce, cabbage, daikon radish, eggs, cucumber, tomatoes with a Japanese mustard miso dressing):

We also had teriyaki chicken and miso butter fish (another favorite). Dessert wasn’t too shabby. S’Mores!

We visited a bit more with my dad and then went back to the hotel.

I went back to my parent’s house this morning to take care of the dog.  I ate a piece of toast with butter and headed to the hospital.

March 2013 158

Tonight we have an event to attend in Los Angeles and then I plan on heading back to San Diego for a few days as long as my dad keeps improving.

Have you ever been to a restaurant where you cook your own food?

137.0…Emotional Rollercoaster

That basically describes the last couple of days. I no sooner got back to San Diego when my mom called and said my dad needs a surgery that will probably kill him and if he doesn’t have it, he will probably die. She told me I needed to drive back.

I got to the hospital two hours later. After much discussion with my family and the doctor, it was determined the best course of action (it’s too complicated to type) was to not have the surgery and hopefully things would repair themselves.

I never ended up having lunch that day because breakfast was filling and I ate it late. By the time I had dinner that night, it was after 10:00PM. I had a grilled chicken sandwich and cream of cauliflower soup.

March 2013 164

I spent the night at the hospital with my mom.

Breakfast yesterday morning was a veggie and cheese omelet.

March 2013 165

I went back to my parent’s house to shower and feed the dog. I got a text from my mom to get back to the hospital fast.

I raced there…my dad was in bad shape. Everyone eventually arrived and we stayed right by his side. After awhile, he slowly started to improve! We took turns eating lunch downstairs. I had a turkey burger and turkey chili.

March 2013 166

By evening, my dad was making jokes and we were all sharing stories and memories together. My husband, brother, his wife and I felt safe enough to walk across the street to Luciano’s  for dinner. We split the bruschetta which was AMAZING.

March 2013 167

I could have just eaten that for dinner.

My husband and I split a pizza as well.

March 2013 168

Last night I went back to my parent’s house and slept there. Breakfast was toast with butter.

March 2013 158

I ran an errand for my mom, then went to the hospital. My dad has been having a pretty good day….I pray it continues.

Lunch was a baked potato and split pea soup.

March 2013 169

While it was filling (at the time) and delicious, it didn’t keep me full long. I think the lack of protein at both breakfast and lunch was a bad idea. Now I’ve been snacking on random stuff in my dad’s room. Counting down the hours until dinner. :)

Thank you for all your prayers and support! Keep them coming!!

138.6…Blue Trays & White Styrofoam Containers

Thank you to all the well wishes for my dad! He’s been moved out of the ICU into a step-down ICU room. It’s basically a middle stage between ICU and a regular room. His condition is slowly improving and we are hopeful.

I wasn’t super hungry for lunch yesterday since I had two breakfasts. :) I knew I needed to eat something so I opted for hummus, pretzel chips and fruit.

March 2013 160

My brother came in the evening and we went down for dinner together to the cafeteria for dinner.

March 2013 161

More blue trays and white styrofoam containers. I had a grilled chicken sandwich and navy bean soup. Both were good. I actually don’t mind the food here.

I went back to my parent’s house a bit after 10 PM and came back this morning. I had breakfast downstairs with my mom.

March 2013 163

Veggie and cheese omelet with a side of Tapatio hot sauce. It was really good!

I’m going to be heading back to San Diego soon so I can take care of some stuff at home and then I plan on coming back in a couple of days.

When was the last time you ate in a cafeteria?

137.8…The Waiting Game

Friday afternoon before I drove back to San Diego, I picked up Corner Bakery for lunch. I had the chopped salad with ranch dressing.

March 2013 148

This picture was taken after I shook it all up. I promise it looked nicer before. :)

Somewhere along the drive home I stopped at a Starbucks drive thru (great invention) for an iced skinny vanilla latte.March 2013 149

Definitely makes the drive a bit more tolerable.

My sister in law and her kids were at my house visiting and then took my daughter for the night. My husband and I dropped my son off at a sleep over party. We decided to go see a movie and have dinner. We ended up seeing “Olympus Has Fallen” which we really enjoyed. It was definitely a nail biter!

We were going to go to Flemmings for dinner but my mom called me to tell me that she had called 911 and they were taking my dad to the hospital. He was severely dehydrated and his condition was declining.

We skipped Flemmings and picked up food from Karl Strauss on the way home.

March 2013 151

Cashew chicken salad that I slammed down quickly, then jumped in the car and drove back to Los Angeles. I arrived around 12:30AM and stayed with my dad until about 2AM. I went back to my parents house, got a couple hours of sleep and came back Sunday morning.

Before I left the house I had toast with peanut butter for breakfast.

March 2013 152

I stayed at the hospital all day yesterday. My brother and his wife came around lunch time and brought me an amazing tuna sandwich from this place by their house.

March 2013 153

We had some ups and downs yesterday but, little by little, I think my dad is improving.

My husband drove up last night and took a break and walked across the street to Luciano’s for dinner. We shared an antipasto salad:

March 2013 156

As well as a cheese pizza:

March 2013 157

Excellent food.

I stayed until about 9:30 last night and then headed back to my parent’s house to sleep.

This morning’s breakfast consisted of two parts. Part 1:

March 2013 158

Toast with butter before leaving for the hospital.

Part 2:

March 2013 159

A veggie and cheese (a lot of cheese) omelet at the hospital cafeteria.

I may or may not drive back to San Diego today. It just moment to moment over here. A waiting game. Right now we just need prayers.

138.4…Extended Stay

Thursday night’s dinner at my parent’s was…..

March 2013 143

El Pollo Loco! Ta Da! I did get a side salad to go with it this time. Usually I give the second side item that it comes with to someone in my family.

Yesterday morning’s breakfast was toast with peanut butter.

March 2013 144

I ended up staying an extra night at my parent’s house. My dad has been pretty sick and my mom needed help getting him to his doctor appointment yesterday.

After we got him settled at the doctor, I picked up a roast beef and avocado sandwich from Subway for lunch.

March 2013 145

We got him home and settled and then my brother and his wife came over for dinner.  We picked up Hamburger Hamlet. I had the chopped Mediterranean salad.

March 2013 146

It was SO good! It was a giant salad and I ate the whole thing. Duh.

This morning’s breakfast was the same as yesterday. Peanut butter on toast.

March 2013 147

I’m going to stay here through lunch and then drive back to San Diego. Enjoy your weekend!

What are you most excited about doing this weekend?

138.2…B.Y.O.H.S (Bring Your Own Hot Sauce)

Tuesday night was a lazy sort of night. Those are the times when I’m glad to have stuff like this in my freezer:

March 2013 132

Awhile back I received a bunch of free coupons for Michael Angelo’s frozen meals. So far we have liked the ones we’ve tried. I was excited to try the Chicken Alfredo. I followed the microwave instructions, made a salad and boom! Dinner was done.

March 2013 133

We actually enjoyed it…even my picky husband! So far so good on Michael Angelo’s frozen meals!

Wednesday morning’s breakfast was pineapple Chobani, Coconut-Sour Cherry Granola and strawberries.

March 2013 134

I took the kids to school, attended an event in my daughter’s class and then ran some errands. I stopped at Wahoo’s for lunch. But…hold your horses….I did NOT order the fish tacos!!! I felt like something else! I ordered a salad!

March 2013 135

Wahoo’s salad with spicy fish. It was pretty darn good. I used their cilantro sauce for my dressing and it was fabulous. They claim their cilantro dressing is fat free but I just don’t see how! It’s SO good!

I attended a meeting at the school and brought the kids home. I took my son to basketball try-outs. He did such a good job….I was a very proud mom!

Later that night, I met my friends over at Lisa’s house to start preparing for an upcoming charity luncheon. There were a ton of decorations to work on so everyone brought over some food and we got cracking.

Lisa made chicken, brown rice and broccoli.

March 2013 137

Now…Lisa and I are about as opposite in spicy food as possible. I can’t get it hot enough and she thinks mashed potatoes are spicy. I knew what I had to do.

March 2013 136

B.Y.O.H.S. Bring Your Own Hot Sauce. I thought Sriracha would be perfect. This is not the first time I have traveled with hot sauce. I actually keep a mini bottle of Cholula in my car. You know….in case of emergencies.

Breakfast this morning was scrambled egg beaters with salsa, pico de gallo, broccoli, avocado and shredded cheddar cheese.

March 2013 141

After I dropped the kids off at school, I volunteered for a bit then drove to Los Angeles to visit my parents. I picked up Corner Bakery for lunch. I ordered the Trio with tuna salad, southwestern avocado wedge and Caesar salad.

March 2013 142

Their tuna salad is especially good! Yum!

Do you or have you ever “traveled” with hot sauce?
